This morning, Melbourne mourns the passing of Georgina Weir, an iconic and beloved figure in the city’s vibrant creative community. Her influence and contributions have left an indelible mark on Melbourne’s cultural landscape.

I first met Georgina at Marmarnie in Mount Macedon in 1991. From that moment, her passion, creativity, and warm spirit were evident. Over the years, she became more than a friend; she was an inspiration to all who had the privilege of knowing her. Georgina’s work and dedication helped shape the artistic fabric of Melbourne, inspiring generations of creatives.

Reflecting on my journey, I am reminded of other great Melbourne icons—John Coote, Kevin O’Neil, John Truscott, Sue Nattress, and Stuart Rattle—many of whom I had the honor to work alongside. Sadly, all have now passed. Their legacies, along with Georgina’s, form the foundation of Melbourne’s rich cultural heritage.
